Notes for Charles E. THOMAS

Their Meade County, South Dakota, marriage certificate shows Olive E. Thurtell (shown also as Olive B Thurtell in the same document), age 28, and Charles E. Thomas, age 30, both of Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota, were married December 28, 1905, in Sturgis by a minister, J. S. Dimwitt (that's what the last name looks like, but it could be Dimmitt or something similar). Witnesses were Mary M. Newell and D. J. Newell. They got their license December 27, 1905, and the record was filed January 6, 1906. Olive Thomas died October 9, 1906, as confirmed by her death certificate.

Charles E. Thomas and his family are listed in the 1910 U.S. Census in Meade County, South Dakota, in School District 71, which was enumerated May 7, 1910 (SD 2, ED 65, Sheet 8B). Charles E. Thomas is listed as a white male age 35. In the marriage field the census shows M2, probably confirming that he was married for the second time. It shows he had been married for one year and that he was born in Maine, as were both his parents. The census record confirms that he was a farmer with a homestead and that he owned the farm mortgage free and that he was an employer. His wife is listed as Bessie W. Thomas, age 26 and born in Iowa, married for one year and the mother of one child, who is living. The marriage field shows M1 for her, indicating that this was her first marriage. The census record shows that her father was born in New York and her mother in Wisconsin, and that her profession was in the home. Both Charles and Bessie can read and write. Their infant son, Leland E. Thomas, age 4/12 and born in South Dakota, is living with them; and the census record confirms that Leland's father was born in Maine and his mother in Iowa. Living at the farm listed just below that of Charles E. Thomas is John S. McGill and his family. John McGill is among the people who signed affidavits to confirm that Charles Thomas had remained on the homestead and operated his farm there at the time the homestead ownership was being finalized.

Charles E. Thomas, age 45 and born in Maine, is listed with his family in the soundex for the 1920 U.S. Census for Butte County, South Dakota (Volume 5, ED 16, Sheet 13). Living with him are his wife, Bessie W. Thomas, age 36 and born in Iowa, and their five children, all of whom were born in South Dakota. The children are Leland E., age 10, Lola E. and Loise E., both age 8, Horace P., age 7, and Nadone (W), age 2 10/12. Living with them is Charles Thomas' father-in-law, Arnold A. Lyke, age 65 and born in New York.
