Notes for Emma L. NEALON

Source: Memory of Madeline Brett. Emma Nealon came to the United States at age 2. Her sister, Lillie Nealon, was 4 when they came to the United States. Emma Nealon Hannigan died in 1952 at age 88. Their father had been a lawyer in Dublin, Ireland, but he had died before the children and their mother came to the United States. They lived in Manhattan, New York, beginning in about 1876. "Nannie" Hannigan lived with Madeline Brett and her parents for years.

Her last name is spelled Nealon on Florence Hannigan Maulick's death certificate but Neilon on Florence Hannigan Maulick's 1972 Social Security number record.

Jean Hennessy Katz remembers that Nannie's wedding anniversary was on February 12, the day as Jean was married to Milton Katz. Neither Jean nor Madeline remember Nannie talking about her parents much or her husband's parents - not even their names.

The U.S. Census for 1900 for New York (Volume 185, Enumeration District 1041, line 82) shows Emma Hannigan was living with her husband and children at 2400 Webster Avenue, New York City, Bronx Borough, New York. It shows she was 36, born in Ireland in May 1864, with both parents born in Ireland, and that she was the mother of eight children, of whom six were living.

The U.S. Census for 1920 for New York (Volume 120, Enumeration District 388, Sheet 11A) shows Emma Hannigan was age 59, born in Ireland, with her father born in Ireland and her mother born in New York. It shows she immigrated to the United States in 1884 and became a naturalized citizen in 1889.
