Edward Smith was a policeman in New York City, New York. His marriage to Florence Hannigan ended due to divorce when Madeline Smith was very young. She lived with her grandparents and mother, and her father was not permitted to see her because of her grandparents. She kept a stained photograph of him all of her life and always wondered about him. She was baptised when she was two days old at St. Vincent Ferrer's Catholic Church, New York.
