Notes for Rowena HARRIS

The maiden name of Rowena was provided by her granddaughter, Phyllis Munsey in a July 1999 e-mail.
She added that she only remembered meeting Rowena once when she was about four years old and that she rather frightened her because Rowena was very tall. Phyllis Munsey recalled that Rowena was deaf at that time and that she was killed around 1927-1929 in a street car accident in Portland, Oregon. She said that she read from the Nevada Historical Society that Rowena, her brother, and her mother had come west to Nevada, she thought from Ohio or Illinois, and that her brother was named Curtis Harris and was a state senator.

Phyllis Munsey's record of the 1875 Nevada census showed that Rowena M. Bishop, age 30, was listed as the wife of Dr. Simeon Bishop. Her information from the Nevada Historical Society showed that Rowena was born in New York and that she and Simeon were married in May 1872 in Carson City, Nevada. His first wife (no name shown) died in 1868 or 1869.

In the 1870 U.S. Census for Washoe City, Washoe County, Nevada, on Page 3, Rowena Harris is shown as a white female, age 25, born in New York, and a School Teacher. She is living with C. N. Harris (undoubtedly her brother), who is shown as age 31, a white male employed as District Judge, who was born in New York, with real estate worth $300 and personal property worth $300. Living with them are Clementine Harris, age 27, a white female whose occupation is keeping house and who was born in the District of Columbia. Relationships are not shown in the 1870 U.S. census, but Clementine is probably the wife of C. N. Harris. Also living with them are Eliza N. Harris, age 60, a white female born in New York, who is shown as "at home," and Hannah Harris, age 20, a white female born in Michigan, who is also shown as "at home."

On the same page of the 1870 U.S. Census is Chas. Harris, a white male age 26 shown as a dry goods dealer, a U.S. citizen who was born in Prussia and whose parents were both of foreign birth. The value of his real estate is blank, but his personal property is valued at $3000. Living with him is D. Harris, a white female age 19 whose occupation is shown as keeping house. She is shown as born in Prussia, with both parents of foreign birth. With them are Fanny Einstein, a white female age 19, born in Wurtenburg, whose parents were of foreign birth, and A. Lewis, a white male age 44, who is a dry goods dealer born in Prussia, whose personal property is worth $100 and whose parents were of foreign birth.

An index to the Nevada State Journal newspaper for 1870-1900 found on the internet in the Ancestry.com library in October 2000 showed that Mrs. Eliza North Harris died January 15, 1887, "at Reno, a native of Renslaer county, New York, aged 77. Mother of C. N. Harris of Carson City, John H. Harris of Bellevue, Idaho, Mrs. W. M. Boardman and Mrs. S. Bishop of Reno, Mrs. W. H. Barnes of San Francisco."
