The 1920 U.S. Census for California (Volume 60, ED 601, Sheet 9, Line 84) shows George Thurtelle as age 38, born in Iowa, living at 1455 1/2 Third, Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, Calfornia. This record shows his father was born in Wisconsin and his mother in Iowa and that he was renting the house where he lived and working for wages as a cook in a hotel. He was living with his wife, Ellen Thurtelle, age 24, who was born in Missouri and whose father was born in Kentucky and mother in Missouri. Also living with them was their daughter, Victoria Thurtelle, age 1 2/12, who was born in California and whose father was born in Iowa and mother born in Missouri.

The California birth index on the internet at RootsWeb.com as of June 2000 shows a female child with the surname Thurtelle and the first and middle names not shown was born November 14, 1918, in Los Angeles County, California. Her mother's maiden name on this online index is shown as Waight. This is an indication that Ellen or Helen Thurtell (or Thurtelle), the wife of George Thurtell (or Thurtelle) had a maiden name of Waight (or Wright as indicated on her death certificate).

It is highly probable that the Ellen Thurtelle listed in the 1920 census as the wife of George Thurtelle is the Helen Buell Thurtelle who died on November 2, 1961, at her home at 2620 Pacific Avenue, Los Angeles (Venice), Los Angeles County, California. Her Los Angeles County death certificate number 21515 shows she was born on January 27, 1893, in Missouri, and was 68 years old at the time of her death. It shows her Social Security number was 573-03-8707 and that her parents were Marshall Wright and Hattie Buell, whose places of birth were unknown. Her occupation for the prior 50 years is shown as housewife, and the death certificate shows she was Caucasian and widowed. It shows she had lived in California for 43 years, all of them in Los Angeles County. The cause of death is shown as hypertensive and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The funeral home was Pierce Brothers, Venice California, and she was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery on November 9, 1961, according to the death certificate. The informant for the death certificate was Helen V. Dillard-Martin of Jasper, Georgia. No relationship of the informant is shown, but it is possible that Helen V. Dillard-Martin could have been the Victoria Thurtelle listed in the 1920 census as the daughter of George and Ellen Thurtelle.
