Notes for John Edward MCCLAIN

John E. McClain is shown as age 15, born in Wisconsin in May 1885, and attending school in the 1900 U.S. Census for Meade County, South Dakota (Volume 11, SD 1, ED 34, Sheet 7, Line 29). He is living with his parents, John and Grace McClain, and four younger siblings in the second ward of the City of Sturgis, Sturgis Township, Meade County, South Dakota.

The marriage certificate for John Edward McClain shows that he married Margaret Hartry at MooseJaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, on Saturday, January 20, 1923, and that the marriage was registered in MooseJaw. Both are shown as being from Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The witnesses were Gow (?) Struson (?) and Louisa Stinson, and the minister's name looks something like J. A. MacKeigan. A note on the marriage certificate from Pearl Sawyer shows the bride was Margaret Bigford. A letter dated October 13, 1999, to Susan Miller from Pearl Sawyer clarified that Margaret Bigford went to live with her oldest sister, Violet, and her husband, Samuel Hartry, after her mother died when Margaret was only one year old. They tried to adopt her, but her father would never agree to it. Throughout her childhood and school years, however, she was as Margaret Hartry.

A 1998 family record from Pearl Sawyer shows John McClain died December 23, 1960, while another family record shows he died January 23, 1960. Both records show he died in Burnaby, British Columbia. His obituary (newspaper unknown) shows he died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 75 on Dec. 23rd, 1960, in Vancouver, B.C. His death certificate from Vancouver confirms that John Edward McClain died December 23, 1960, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It shows he was 75 years old on his last birthday and that he was born in Minnesota, U.S.A. It lists his residence as 4424 Frances Street, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

A database index of Bureau of Land Management Records found on the internet in January 2000 at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sd/land/perkins.htm shows that John and Grace McClain and John E. McClain (possibly their son) had five different land patents in Perkins County, South Dakota, all at the 7th Meridian, Township 018 N, Range 012 E, in Sections 8 and 9. John McClain had two homestead patents dated May 26, 1908. The one in Section 8 was for 120 acres, with a document identification number 3645. The same document identification number is also referred to a homestead of 40 acres in Section 9. Document number 108181 dated February 1, 1910, is indexed to cash sales of 120 acres in Section 8 and 40 acres in Section 9 to John E. McClain. Document identification number 447193 dated December 5, 1914, refers to a cash sale of 80 acres to Grace McClain in Section 8.
