Notes for George McDonald MURRAY

Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that George McDonald Murray, born August 21, 1906, was a farmer of Goliatskraal (a sheep farm), Graaff Reinet district, and also ran two businesses in tractors and motor cars, one in Port Elizabeth and one in Graaff Reinet, South Africa. After his retirement he still ran one small farm, "Rockwood." For many years he was the South African Representative of the London Wool Brokers, and also for many years served as vice-president and president of the National Wool Growers Association. He also took an active part in management of many sports organizations. For 20 years he was Chairman of the Graaff Reinet Mohair Growers Association. He made a great impression on Freda (Mrs. E. G. D.) Murray who described him as a "cheerful, marvellous personality" who overcame many misfortunes. He was shot and injured accidentally at age 6 (saved by Dr. G. A. E. Murray), later had both legs totally crippled by polio, and after retirement was paralysed and near death from bee stings but recovered. He married Minnie Edwards Trollip, "Tom." Eventually, in old age they moved to 77 Donkin Street in Graaff Reinet. In February 1987 she was gravely ill with heart and kidney condition, then being about 79 years old and described by Marge Shearing as "one of the finest characters I have ever known." George and "Tom" had five children.
