Notes for Charles Horace THURTELL
Information received from Michael Owen Thurtell in 1998 shows that Charles Horace Thurtell owned a farm in the Willowmore District, South Africa, called Mierkrall, which roughly translated means ant corral. He sold his farm on May 1, 1912, and retired to Willowmore, South Africa. Michael Thurtell has pictures of Charles Horace Thurtell and his wife.
The death notice for Charles Horace Thurtell, 1917 - 6/9/884 1200, shows that he was born in Uitenhage, South Africa, of European descent, and that his parents were Horace Clark Thurtell and Gertrude Thurtell. He was a retired farmer residing at Willowmore, South Africa, at the time of his death on Wednesday, March 21, 1917, at his own house, Town of Willowmore, District of Willowmore, at the age of 56 years 3 months. He had been married at Willowmore out of Community of property to Catharina Johanna Stoffelina Thurtell, formerly Verwey, born Haywood. His children are listed as Louis Johannes Verwey (stepson); Horace Charles Thurtell; Maria Stoffelina Thurtell, married out of C/P Lucas Daniel van der Berg; and Gertrude Alice Thurtell, married in community of property to Willem Johannes Hendrik Kilian. He had moveable and immoveable property, and a will that exceeds 300. His death notice was dated at Willowmore, March 31, 1917, and was signed by C. J. S. Thurtell, surviving spouse present at death.
