Notes for Sylvia Ann PIERSON

The birth affidavit for Sylvia Ann Pierson Thurtell shows she was a female born on February 6, 1896, in Laurel, Nebraska, and a resident of 211 Curtis, Brush, Colorado 80723. It was signed October 2, 1970, by her sister, Goldie Smith, 605 16 Street, Greeley, Colorado 80631, and showed she had known this person for 74 years. It also states that "She was born in our home. There was no doctor present. Aunt Kate Iler (deceased) was the midwife."

An Internation Certificate of Vaccination for Sylvia Thurtell, 211 Curtis, Brush, Morgan County, Colorado 80723, showed she was born February 6, 1896, and that she received smallpox vaccinations on September 17 and 24, 1970, from Dr. James G. Price, Box 305, Brush, Colorado 80723.

Her receipt for her application for Railroad Retirement benefits shows that Sylvia A. Nichols, Social Security number 523-32-2719, applied for these benefits on December 10, 1982, on the account of her husband, Arnold Nichols, Social Security number 707-07-8560, at Brush, Colorado, with the District Office address for Railroad Retirement Board listed as Denver, Colorado.

Her death certificate shows that Sylvia A. Nichols, Social Security number 523-32-2719, died September 10, 1991, at 6:05 a.m. at East Morgan County Hospital, Brush, Morgan County, Colorado. It shows she was born February 6, 1896, in Laurel, Nebraska, and was 95 at the time of her death. The informant was her daughter, Mary Strauch. According to the death certificate, she was the widow of Arnold Nichols and her usual occupation was a cook in a restaurant. Her residence had been 2200 Edison Street, Brush, Morgan County, Colorado 80723. Her parents' names are shown as Mary Iler and George A. Pierson. The funeral home was Heer Mortuary, 222 Cameron, Brush, Colorado 80723, and burial was at Akron Cemetery, Akron, Colorado. The cause of death was cardio respiratory arrest, bilateral pneumonia, and a perforated large intestine.

The obituary for Sylvia Nichols clipped from an unknown newspaper shows "Mrs. Sylvia A. (Thurtell) Nichols, 95, of Brush died early this morning at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. Mrs. Nichols was born Feb. 6, 1896 in Laurel, Neb. to George and Mary Pierson. She had lived most of her life in Washington and Morgan Counties. Her first husband, Robert Thurtell passed away in 1965 and her husband, Arnold Nichols, died in 1982. Prior to retirement, she had cooked in area restaurants. She was a member of the Brush Church of Christ. Survivors include three daughters: Florence Irving of Naples, Fla., Thelma Friend of Fruitdale, Ida. and Mary Strauch of Brush; four sons: Dean Thurtell of Camillus, N.Y., Frank Thurtell of Annapolis, Md., Bernard of Altoona, Iowa and C. Dale Thurtell of Brighton; one brother, Raymond Pierson of Wellington; two sisters, Lucy Siebrands of Wellington and Gladys Belshaw of Fort Collins; 26 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, two daughters and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Brush Church of Christ, 810 Edmunds St., with Jim Watson officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at the Akron Cemetery. Heer Mortuary is in charge of arrangements."
