Edward B. Thurtell is shown as age 19 and born in Iowa living with his parents, Frank and Eva S. Thurtell, on his father's farm in the U.S. Census for 1900 for Iowa (Volume 60, ED 102, SD 11, Sheet 5, Line 72) in Elkhorn Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. Edward B. Thurtell was born in March 1889 according to the census soundex, but the last digit of the year is hard to read in the census itself and probably should be 1881. He is shown as a farm laborer. Seven of his siblings are also living with the family.

Family information showed that Edward and Rose Thurtell lived in Shawnee, Kansas, just outside Kansas City, and had no children.
