Notes for Emma BECHTEL

Emma Bechtel Thurtell is shown as Emma Thurtell in the 1900 U.S. Census for Jo Davies County, Illinois (Vol. 100, ED 32, Sheet 12, Line 64). She is shown as age 40, born in April 1860 in Iowa. She is shown as head of the household, married for 19 years, and the mother of three children, all of whom were still living. No occupation is shown for her. This census record shows both her parents were born in Germany and that she owned her own home but had a mortgage. No street address or city is shown, and the area where she lived was apparently unincorporated in Dunleith Township, Jo Davies County, Illinois. Her children were living with her, and the census records for all three children show their mother was born in Iowa and their father was born in Wisconsin. George Thurtell, her son, is shown as age 18, born in September 1881 in Iowa, employed all months of the year as a salesman in the Butcher Shop. Emma Thurtell, her daughter, is shown as age 16, born in November 1883 in Iowa, employed all months of the year as a shirtmaker in the Overall Factory. Barbara Thurtell, her daughter, is shown as age 13, born in October 1886 in Iowa, and in school. All four members of the family are shown as able to speak, read, and write English.

Emma Thurtell is shown in the 1920 U.S. Census Soundex for Iowa (Vol. 25, ED 124, Sheet 25, Line 35) as living at 264 Longworthy Avenue, Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. She is shown as white, age 58, and born in Iowa. She is enumerated with Joseph C. Garland, and her relationship to him is shown as servant.

Information received from Cynthia Kerman shows Emma Bechtel Thurtell was born April 23, 1860, in Dubuque, Iowa, and died April 26, 1951, in Holt, Michigan. Her father was Justus Bechtel, who was born June 7, 1820; and her mother was Barbara Becker, born July 18, 1825. They were married in Germany February 6, 1849, and arrived in New York August 22, 1849. Justus Bechtel died before 1866, when his daughter was born. Barbara Becker Bechtel died in 1914.

An obituary for Mrs. Emma Bechtel Thurtell appeared in the May 3, 1951, "Dubuque Herald." It stated, "Mrs. Emma Bechtel Thurtell, 91, formerly of Dubuque, died April 26 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. C. (Barbara) Earl, of Flint, Mich., friends here learned Thursday. Services and burial were April 28 in Flint. She left Dubuque to reside with her daughter in Flint about 15 years ago. She had lived with the J. C. Garland family here. Surviving are her daughter, five grandchildren and nieces and nephews in Dubuque."
