Notes for Belle THURTELL
Information from Cynthia Kerman showed that Belle Thurtell married Henry Travis. She taught school in Sinipee, Wisconsin, and later in Sturgis, South Dakota. Belle took care of her elderly mother, Amy Burns Thurtell.
The entry about Ransom B. Folts in a 1901 Grant County, Wisconsin, biographical record shows his wife's sister, Belle Thurtell, was the widow of Henry Travers.
She is listed as Anna B. Thurtle in the 1870 U.S. Census for the Town of Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, the youngest child of Edward Thurtle and Anna Thurtle. She is shown as age 9, a white female, born in Wisconsin and attending school.
The IGI shows Belle Thurtell married Henry Travis on June 24, 1891, in Meade County, South Dakota (film number 1985489).
She is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census for the Town of Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin (SD 2, ED 110, Page 3), enumerated June 2, 1880, as Belle Thurtle, age 19, single, attending school within the census year, whose occupation is teaching school. She is living with her widowed mother, Anna Thurtle, and her siblings Frederick, age 25, a miner, Harriet, age 23, and Grace, age 21.
She is listed as Bell Travis in the 1900 U.S. Census Soundex living on Sherman Street, Sturgis, Sturgis Precinct, Meade County, South Dakota, in Volume 11, ED 34, Sheet 1, Line 56. This record shows her as age 38, born in Wisconsin in July 1861. She is living with her daughters, Amy Travis, who is shown as age 6, born in May 1894 in South Dakota, and Henrietta Travis, age 4, born in February 1896 in South Dakota. Also living with her is her mother, Amy Thurtell, who is shown as age 79, born in August 1820 in North Carolina.
In the 1910 U.S. Census for Meade County, South Dakota (SD 2, ED 68, Sheet 22A, City of Sturgis, Ward 3), Amy B. Travis, age 48 and a widow, is shown as head of the household and owning her home mortgage free on Sherman Street, Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota. The census shows she has her own income and was born in Wisconsin with her father born in England and her mother in North Carolina, and she is the mother of two children, both of whom are living. Her children, Amy Travis, age 15 and born in South Dakota, and Henrietta Travis, age 14 and born in South Dakota, are in school. Living with her is her mother, Amy Thurtell, age 89 and a widow and mother of 10 children, of whom 7 were still living. This census shows she was born in North Carolina and that her father was born in Germany and her mother in North Carolina. A roomer, Ada E. Boyer, age 30 and born in Iowa, is ennumerated with the family.
She is listed in the index of the Bureau of Land Management Records for Meade County, South Dakota, found on the internet in July 1999 at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/meade/land/mead-t.txt. This database lists a Belle Travis obtaining land May 8, 1901, in Meridian 7, Township 006N, Range 009E, Section 31, of 160 acres, type 251101 (Homestead), Case Type patent, document identification number 2390. There is another listing in this database for Amy Belle Travis obtaining land May 29, 1913, in Meridian 7, Township 007N, Range 006E, Section 20, of 160 acres, type 251101 (Homestead), Case Type patent, document identification number 337982. This same database has a listing for Heirs of Olive E. Thurtell obtaining land June 11, 1912, in Meridian 7, Township 007N, Range 006E, Section 20, of 160 acres, type 251101 (Homestead), Case Type patent, document identification number 273698. The relationship of Olive E. Thurtell to anyone else in the family is unclear, although she could be the Olive E. Thurtell, daughter of Frank Thurtell and Eva St. Clair Minnick, who died about 1906 in Sturgis, South Dakota.
