Notes for Harriet Ellen THURTELL

The entry about Ransom B. Folts in a 1901 Grant County, Wisconsin, biographical record shows his wife's sister, Harriet Thurtell, was the wife of Hugh Cattnach of Minnesota.

She is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census for the Town of Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin (SD 2, ED 110, Page 3), enumerated June 2, 1880, as Harriet Thurtle, age 23, born in Wisconsin, single, attending school in the prior yearn, living with her widowed mother, Anna Thurtle, and her siblings Frederick, age 25, a miner, Grace, age 21, and Belle, age 19, whose occupation is teaching school.

Family Tree Maker CD 222, using the 1851-1900 Iowa Marriage Index based on Library of Congress book reference number 977.716 V2p, shows that Hattie Thurtell, female, and Hugh Cattnach were married July 24, 1882, in Plymouth County, Iowa.

She is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census for Minnesota as Hattie Cattnach, born in Wisconsin in December 1856 and age 43 living in Fairmont Village, Martin County, Minnesota (Volume 32, ED 165, Sheet 13 for Martin County, Minnesota). It shows she and her husband have been married 18 years and that she is the mother of eight children, all of whom are still living. The census shows her father was born in England and her mother in North Carolina. Living with her and listed as head of the household is her husband, Hugh Cattnach, who is 40 and was born in February 1860 in Canada, with his father born in Scotland and his mother in Canada. The census shows he immigrated to the United States in 1870 and had lived in the United States 30 years and that he was a naturalized U.S. citizen. His occupation is shown as day laborer, and the census shows he had no months when he was not employed. He rented the house where he and his family lived. Also living with them are their children. Their son Albert Cattnach is 17 and was born in Iowa in February 1883, and his occupation is shown as delivery boy. Their son Leslie Cattnach is 15 and was born in North Dakota in February 1885. Their son Lynn Cattnach is 13 and was born in August 1886 in Iowa. Their son Floyd Cattnach was born in Iowa in October 1887 and is 12, and their daughter Minnie M. Cattnach was born in Iowa in October 1891 and is 8. Their daughter Amy B. Cattnach is 5 and was born in Iowa in January 1895, and their son Ora Cattnach is 2 and was born in Iowa in June 1897.

The "Autobiography of Amy Belle (Cattnach) Witwer" shows that Harriet Ellen Thurtell was born December 20, 1856. Their family moved to Olds, Alberta, Canada, in March 1907, where they lived on a farm four miles east and one mile south of Olds. In August or September 1907, Harriet Cattnach had gone to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she was told she had cancer and might live a year. She died December 30, 1907, in her husband's arms in their home, and Amy was present at the time. She was buried in Olds on January 1, 1908, and the hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" was sung at her funeral.

A 1993 Carstairs, Alberta, Canada, Cemetery index found on the internet in February 2000 at http://www.calcna.ab.ca/aths/cemetery/carst_a.html prepared by the Alberta, Canada, Family Histories Society, lists Harriet Ellen Cattnach, 1856-1907, and Emily Cattnach, 1875-1918.
