Notes for Thelma Ann THURTELL

According to a family story, Thelma rode off on a motorcycle and eloped with Roy, her first husband.

A February 9, 2000, e-mail forwarded from her nephew, Anthony W. (Bill) Barnett showed that Thelma Friend passed away on Monday, February 7, 2000. She had been suffering from cancer and started failing very rapidly. She had been staying with her son, Joe Friend, in Council, Idaho. Thelma Friend had attended the Thurtell Family Reunion in Cleveland, New York, in August 1999.

The obituary for Thelma Ann Friend appeared in the "Adams County Record" in Adams County, Idaho, on page 4 on February 10, 2000. It showed "Thelma Ann Friend, 71, Council, passed away at home of natural causes Monday, February 7, 2000. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2000, at 1:00 p.m. at the Council Church of the Nazarene. Graveside services will follow at the Old Meadows Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Elmer, of 17 years. Thelma was born and raised in Colorado where she met and married Elmer Earl Friend on June 1, 1951. In 1952 Thelma and Elmer moved to Idaho where they raised their two sons, Joe and Pete. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her family on the Salmon and Snake Rivers. Following Elmer's death in 1968, Thelma began work at the Council Community Hospital. In the late 80's Thelma ended her employment with the hospital and began in-home care. For the next several years Thelma cared for numerous individuals from Council to Boise until 1999 when she ended her employment to return home. Thelma was especially devoted to her family and her beliefs. Some of her happiest moments were when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She loved gardening, crocheting, reading, and traveling to see her brothers and sisters. Thelma donated her time graciously to the community and friends, and was always there to give a helping hand. Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer, and seven of her eleven brothers and sisters. She leaves behind her two sons, their wives and seven grandchildren and their spouses. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home, Weiser."

The Social Security death index shows that Thelma Friend, whose Social Security number 522-32-6065 was issued in Colorado, was born July 14, 1928, and died in February 7, 2000, while residing in Fruitvale, Adams County, Idaho 83620.
