Notes for Amy BURNS
The date of birth of Amy Burns Thurtell was received from Cynthia Kerman in 1998. Her name is often shown as Anna rather than Amy.
The 1850 U.S. Census for Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, page 136, shows her as Anna Thurtle, age 28, born in Indiana, living with her husband, Edward B. Thurtle, age 35, a farmer born in England whose real estate was valued at $1200. Their children, all born in Wisconsin, are shown as Edward, age 7, Ann, age 6, Walter, age 4, and Catharine, age 1.
The 1860 U.S. Census for Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, enumerated July 14, 1860, which shows the Post Office as Fair Play, Wisconsin, lists her with her husband, Edward B. Thurtle, and their children on page 95. She is shown as Amy Thurtle, age 39, born in Indiana.
She is shown in the 1870 U.S. Census for the Town of Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, enumerated August 6, 1870, showing the Post Office as Platteville, Grant County, Wisconsin, on page 15 with her husband, Edward Thurtle, and their children. She is shown as Anna Thurtle, age 49, born in Indiana, whose occupation is keeping house.
She is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census for the Town of Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin (SD 2, ED 110, Page 3), enumerated June 2, 1880, as Anna Thurtle, a widow, age 60, whose occupation is keeping house. It shows she was born in North Carolina and that both her parents were born in North Carolina. Her children Frederick, age 25, a miner, Harriet, age 23, Grace, age 21, and Belle, age 19, whose occupation is teaching school, live with her, along with Nancy Burns, age 23, who is single and a servant, who was born in Indiana and whose father was born in North Carolina and mother was born in Indiana.
There is an microfilmed index card on file at the National Archives, Chicago Region, in the General Pension Index microfilm series for Edward Thurtell showing that his mother, Amy Thurtell, filed for a veteran's pension on September 5, 1890, in South Dakota, based on the service of Edward Thurtell, which is shown as I 25 Wis. Inf. The application number of her pension was 476.014, and the certificate number was 3566.90. The same index card was found online in the Ancestry.com library in July 2000.
She is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census Soundex for Meade County, South Dakota (Vol. 11, ED 34, Sheet 1, Line 56) as living on Sherman Street, Sturgis, Sturgis Precinct, Meade County South Dakota, with her daughter Bell Travis and grandchildren Amy and Henrietta Travis. Amy Thurtell is shown as age 79, born in North Carolina in August 1820.
In the 1910 U.S. Census for Meade County, South Dakota (SD 2, ED 68, Sheet 22A, City of Sturgis, Ward 3), Amy Thurtell is shown as age 89, a widow and mother of 10 children, of whom 7 were still living. This census shows she was born in North Carolina and that her father was born in Germany and her mother in North Carolina. She is living with her daughter, Amy B. Travis, a widow who owns her own home on Sherman Street, Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota, and has her own income. Amy B. Travis is shown as head of the household, age 48 and born in Wisconsin with her father born in England and her mother in North Carolina, and she is the mother of two children, both of whom are living. Her children, Amy Travis, age 15 and born in South Dakota, and Henrietta Travis, age 14 and born in South Dakota, are in school. A roomer, Ada E. Boyer, age 30 and born in Iowa, is ennumerated with the family.
