Notes for Timothy MORRISON
Much of the information about Timothy Morrison and his family is from a listing of births and deaths of the Morrison family in the handwriting of Mate Snow Thurtell written in the early 1930's with the annotation "The old family Bible was gone - no one knew anything about it. These names and dates were copied in the one Bible they have now." This sheet is in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller. This sheet showed Timothy Morrison was born February 8, 1805. Records from the Groton Town Clerk's Office, Caledonia County, Vermont, researched by Jim Dresser (Jim@Dresser.net) in 1997 show that Timothy Morrison was born July 8, 1805, rather than in February.
Timothy Morrison and his family are listed in the 1850 U.S. Census for Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont (Cale 137, lines 154-158). This shows Timothy Morrison, age 45, a farmer, owning real estate valued at $2800, living with his wife, Olive, age 42, and his children Harriet age 19, Christine age 16, Braley (should be Bradley) age 13, George age 11, Mariah age 8, and Betsey age 5. All of them were born in Vermont. The census was ennumerated on September 13, 1850, with the information as of June 1, 1850.
Timothy Morrison is also listed in the Vermont 1840 U.S. Census index (Cale 360, Groton). He is not listed in the Vermont 1820 or 1830 U.S. Census indexes.
A great deal of additional information was received about Timothy Morrison, his ancestors, and his descendants in 1997 from Jim Dresser, who has a database on people from Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont (Jim@@Dresser.net).
The book "Mister Glover's Groton" shows on page 171 "On 12 June 1854, the school board drove stakes outlining the new school grounds and awarded Timothy Morrison $25 for damages." On page 180 it shows that on 28 March 1871, the school board voted to pay Timothy Morrison $1.44 per cord for 8 cords of firewood for the school. On page 229 it shows that in 1829 he was elected as the Town Pound keeper.
The 1870 U.S. Census for Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont, on page 72A, lists Timothy Morrison as a white male age 65, born in Vermont, and a farmer with real estate valued at $3000 and a personal estate valued at $700, and eligible to vote. Living with him is Sarah B. Morrison, a white female age 44 who was born in Vermont and whose occupation is keeping house. None of the parents of either of them were of foreign birth. With them, all born in Vermont, are Jackson W. Morrison, a white male age 12, Martha J. Morrison, a white female age 10, Austin N. Morrison, a white male age 8, and Sarah B. Morrison, a white female age 3. The three older children are all in school.
Reverend Rufus Emery's 1890 book, "Genealogical Records of Descendants of John and Anthony Emery of Newbury, Mass." showed that person 1129, Timothy Morrison, the son of Bradbury Morrison and Betsey Emery, was born on February 8, 1805, in Groton, Vermont. It shows he married first, Olive Paul; and second, Sarah Rhodes, and that he died June 24, 1882.
