Notes for Henry Leroy THURTELL
Henry Leroy Thurtell, known as Leroy or Roy, was born in Reno, Nevada, but moved with his parents and siblings to Washington, DC, at about age 6, when his father was named the first commissioner of the Federal Interstate Commerce Commission. He attended schools in Washington, DC, and graduated from Central High School in Washington, DC. He then attended the University of Virginia, where he played football and captained the tennis team. He earned his arts degree and then in 1928 his law degree at the University of Virginia. He was in private law practice in Washington, DC, from 1929 until 1936, when he joined the claims division of the U.S. General Accounting Office. He transferred in 1946 to the War Assets Administration as a claims attorney and also served as counsel in the Hawaii office. He returned to Washington, DC, in 1949, after that agency was absorbed by the General Services Administration. In 1951 he was appointed Regional Counsel for the U.S. General Services Administration, Denver, Colorado, where he served until retiring July 1, 1972. His hobby was playing bridge, and in 1952 he became the first Life Master in Colorado.
An article by Len Smith in the Denver Post on Sunday, February 21, 1971, on page 41, describes him as "one of the most astute bridge players of all time." In the 1930's and 1940's he was a member of a bridge team that included such top players as R. L. (Skinny) Miles, Jr., of Norfold, Virginia, Irving Fisher of Baltimore, Emily Folline of Richmond, Virginia, and Charles Shapiro of Washington, DC, a team that "won a multitude of regional tournaments and scored well in nationals."
He enjoyed all types of card games and never lost his temper regardless of the mistakes others made. He was often called the Judge by his friends and associates.
He is shown as white, age 4, born in Nevada in the U.S. Census for Reno City, Washoe County, Nevada, for 1910 (Supervisor's District 171, Enumeration District 71, Sheet 7A). This shows he was living with his parents, siblings, and grandmother Maria Snow at 761 North Centre Street, Reno, Nevada. The census was enumerated on April 10, 1910.
He is listed as an alumnus of the Class of 1924 of the University of Virginia, Arts and Sciences Department, on a web page of the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni found in September 2000 at http://www.alumni.virginia.edu/reunions/TJsociety/members/memberslost.htm. This page showed him as a lost alumnus.
His death certificate shows that he died May 30, 1975, at St. Anthony Central Hospital, Denver, Denver County, Colorado. He and his wife had lived at 12585 West Alameda Drive, Lakewood, Jefferson County, Colorado, since 1971. Prior to that, from 1954 to 1971, they lived at 884 South Vallejo Street, Denver, Denver County, Colorado. As they had long requested, both Leroy and later his wife, Janet Kasner Thurtell, were cremated, with their ashes scattered in the Rocky Mountains at Red Rocks, not far from Denver.
