Notes for Howard Chapel THURTELL

The wife and children of Howard Thurtell are listed in the Thurtell Family History done about 1963 and History of the Thurtell Family compiled by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller.

He is listed in the 1911 Traverse City, Michigan, directory as "Thurtell, Howard, clk, bds 440 6th."

The Social Security death record shows Howard Thurtell was born May 18, 1893, and died in November 1965. His Social Security number, 386-10-6189, was issued in Michigan. His residence at the time of death was Michigan. A letter dated February 25, 1998, from Dr. James W. Miller states that Howard died in Grand Ledge, Michigan.

Howard C. Thurtell is shown as age 7 born in Michigan in May 1893 and attending school in the 1900 U.S. Census for Manitowoc County, Wisconsin (SD 213, ED 71, Sheet 9), living in the First Ward of Manitowoc City, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, with his parents, Herbert and Carrie M. Thurtell, his sister Helen A. Thurtell, and his maternal grandfather, Llewellyn Chapel, whose last name looks like Chaper in the census.

He is shown as age 16 born in Michigan in the 1910 U.S. Census Soundex for Michigan (030 0056 0270). He is shown living with his parents, Herbert and Carrie Thurtell, his sister Helen age 14, and his sister Irene age 9, in Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan.

Howard Thurtell is listed as age 26 born in Michigan in the 1920 U.S. Census Soundex for Michigan (Vol. 53, E.D. 73 or 93, Sheet 3, Line 3), living on Paris Road, East Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He is living with his wife, Hattie, age 26, and their daughter, Jane, age 5/12.

The 1928-29 city directory for Grand Rapids, Michigan, shows Howard C. Thurtell, whose wife's name is Harriet, as a salesman with a home at 1716 Linden Avenue SE. Also in this directory on a separate line was Robert Thurtell, a student, residing at 1716 Linden Avenue SE. Perhaps this was meant to be Howard Travis Thurtell, or perhaps another relative was staying with the family.

The 1929-30 Grand Rapids, Michigan, city directory shows Howard C. Thurtell, whose wife's name is Harriet, as a traveling salesman whose home was at 1716 Linden Avenue, SE. They were the only Thurtells listed in this directory.

The 1931 and 1940 Grand Rapids, Michigan, city directories show "Thurtell, Howard C (Harriet E), Slsmn Capital Management Sorp, h 1716 Linden Av SE." This was probably a typing error for Corporation and shows his profession as a salesman.

An index to obituaries for Kent County, Michigan, found on the internet at http://206.114.60.76:591/KentCountyObits/FMPro in November 1999 showed that the obituary for Howard Thurtell appeared in the Grand Rapids Press on November 26, 1965. This obituary was on page 41 and shows "THURTELL. Howard C. Thurtell, aged 72, of 306 Dexter St., Ionia, passed away suddenly Thursday. He is survived by his wife, Harriette; one son, Howard T., and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Houseman, both of Lowell; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Roy Peters of Coloma. Mr. Thurtell reposes at the Roth Funeral Home, Lowell, where friends may meet the family Friday evening between 7 and 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m., Rev. Norman Woon officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery."
