The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 Thurtell family history, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show that Walter Thurtell married (1) Ellen, (2) Matilda, and (3) Emma Harden and had no issue.

Emma J. Thurtell is shown as age 51, born in Norwood, Surrey, England, in the 1881 British Census CD, with her relationship to Walter Thurtell listed as the third wife. Walter Thurtell is listed as an agricultural merchant age 59, born in Wighton, Norfolk, England, with a dwelling on Grange Road and the census place at Sutton, Surrey, England. Also with them are their housemaid Agnes Martice, age 18, born in Stretham, Surrey, England, and their domestic cook Sarah Hale, age 33, born in Bramford, Essex, England.
