According to information received from Michael Thurtell in 1998, Gertrude Elizabeth Pitout Thurtell was born in Uitenhage, the daughter of Sarel Pitout and Elizabeth Pitout. She was a housewife and died on February 9, 1912, at her residence in Willowmore, South Africa. She was 84 years, 9 months old when she died.

This information is confirmed by her death notice, 1912 - 6/9/686 511, which also shows that she was the widow of Horace Clark Thurtell, who died on June 16, 1901.
