Notes for Edwin Probart KNOX-DAVIES

The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, list Edwin Probart Davies but provide no further information. According to information received in 1997 from Peter Murray, he married Natie de Klerk and they had five children mentioned but not named in the Thurtell Pedigree.

Information received from Evan Knox-Davies in 1999 shows Edwin Probart Knox-Davies was born January 22, 1878, in Hanover and died August 6, 1967, at age 89 at Pietermaritzburg. Following the death of his father, and at his father's request, the last name of Edwin and his siblings was changed to the hyphenated Knox-Davies about 1885. His information shows he married first Katherine De Klerk and later Maude Frances and that he led an interesting and varied life. He was born exactly one year before the battle of Isandlwana and was educated in Britain. He was an ambulanceman on the Boer side the the Anglo-Boer war and was jailed on his 21st birthday for making pro-Boer remarks. He fought in the First World War in South-West Africa and East Africa and held the rank of Captain. He later mined diamonds at Elandsputte in the Transvaal and farmed near Malmesbury in the Cape. Information about the descendants of Edwin Probart Knox-Davies was also provided by Evan Knox-Davies.
